Short backstory
Born into a family of devout Japanese spiritual traditionalists, Morty realized from a young age that he was different. He would often wake and live in fear, prone to fits of emotional overload and flashing visions of spirits and other preternatural creatures. Each night, plagued with paralysis and terrors, Morty would suffer. His family and friends claimed that he was “making it all up” for attention, but he always knew that everything he both saw and felt was very real. Where he was raised on the grounds of an ancient family shrine, Morty decided to study religion and mysticism, and to develop his abilities through fighting his fears firsthand—despite the ardent disapproval from his family. Eventually fractured from his home and loved ones because of his natural gravitation toward the darker sides of the unexplained, Morty was cast off as “weird” and “cursed”, and left alone. He moved from home to develop his own beliefs and finish his education, as well as to both found and teach his own methods of psychic spiritualism. Morty has since developed a very intense spiritual connection, and he likes to use this connection to help others whenever he can.
